Makeup Advice?

Salam 3alaikum sisters,

I have a question I hope you can help me with inshaAllah.

I like to wear make up in the house for my husband, but this is something that I don't have a lot of experience with. Before Islam I almost never wore make up and the three years after Islam before I got married, I only really wore make up for short periods of time for ladies gatherings or 3id.

So my question is, how do you keep your make up on all day?! It is my understanding that I've got to water to all parts of my face/skin when I make wudhu, which means the make up has to come off every time I get clean for prayers.

Is there some secret tip to this that I am missing?? I know there are ladies out there who wear make up all day, so how do you do it?? Please educate me!!

Thanks sisters <3

wow masha'Allah it's been awhile since you posted something! Alhamdulilah for my blog updater hee hee..

to answer your question, from my experience...i think how i used to keep my makeup on all day (in my non-Muslim days) is I used to reapply often ..and i think that would go for our Muslim days too ..i mean not reapply a whole cake batter of makeup on one's face but like slight touch ups..with whatever u notice that comes off..

i try to stick to the waterproof mascara and i dont really use foundation or that powder stuff...but try BB cream! its really good! i just bought one and its like a tinted moisturizer with all these added minerals and goodies for ur skin (well thats what they say anyway.... :\ lol ) i find it doesnt really wash off as i tested it at home after wudu. ohh and i think thats what makeup primers do too..u put it on before u apply ur makeup and its supposed to even out things and to also last...MAC has this really good spray you spray on after your done ur makeup so that it is gauranteed to stay on... (i used to use this ) i forgot what its called though!!!

i hope that helps...wow talk about jibber jabber! lol :p

lol yes it has been long :-/ I haven't felt very up to spending a lot of time online until just lately. I'm trying to put together a few posts to space out inshaAllah.

Ok maybe this is just my misunderstanding, but I thought that we have to get the water UNDER the make up, you know like how we have to take off fingernail polish to get water to our nail. So I would like take off all my make up or just not put any on at all because I will just have to take it off when I make wudhu lol.

I think i saw the BB cream at walmart, and I was looking at other primers. I had previously been using a tinted moisturizer since i cant just blend it in with my lotion that i put on after i make wudhu anyway.

I wonder where I can find MAC stuff here, or if I should just order online. It so weird because when I go in a store I don't feel comfortable trying on the make up and stuff lol since I don't wear make up outside my house.

well, your question you're posing is wondering how the makeup stays on all day ..and thats the only answer I can think of (re: re-applying and touching up)....and yes the makeup has to get UNDER THE MAKEUP and NAILS. but i dont wear nailpolish or much makeup for that matter anyway.

BB cream you can get it anywhere but if you want more expensive you get @ Sephora..less expensive then WALMART. and as for trying makeup @ MAC ....i never tried makeup on my face whenever I went to a MAC store (when i was non Muslim) ...they usually just put it on the back of your hand (lipstick, blush, eyeliners, etc) not sure you would need to try makeup on your face when you are there and also if you do try on makeup on your face in the store, they have makeup remover that you can use to take it off your face, so its really not that complicated.

      :)

  2. SalamAlaikum sister,

That is the big reason I don't wear makeup so often because I would have to was it off and reapply every few hours which seems pointless and a waste of time/money but I have recently got some new makeup and used it once so far yikes lol
It's not such a big deal for my husband as he doesn't like the smells of makeup and prefers me au natural mashAllah But it's good to wear it now and again to make myself feel good at least

Yes I think it should be sort of a balance. If you do it every day then it isn't special any more...

  3. I really do not wear make-up. Just a little mascara and eyeliner. I have never worn foundation or powder, but when I do apply eyeshadow, it is in the evening after Isha. Just for my husband! :) I am sure you know as you said you do not use make-up a lot. If you just keep your face clean and moisturized, you do not need make-up any ways. A natural glow is so much nicer then a painted glow. :)

    1. Yes I do love moisturizer :-D

so do you wash off your mascara and such before you make wudhu?

    2. I use waterproof mascara. :)And whatever smudges with the eyeliner, I just clean off with a cotton swab. :)

    3. I would think that waterproof mascara would make wudhu invalid since the water can't get to your eyelashes, like nail polish. Am I mistaken?

I really want to be doing the right thing inshaAllah, sorry for all the questions :-P Thanks for commenting again UmmAhmad, by the way I read through your blog and mashaAllah Ahmad is soooooo adorable!!!

    4. Thanks! I wouldn't know if it makes it invalid or not. Besides, if you are wearing make-up and just patting your face dry, then wouldn't that make you wudu invalid? I am just wondering, as I would think mascara doesn't cover your eyelashes fully. I don't cake it on like some ladies.

    5. I really don't know, thats why I have been just taking all of my make up off before I make wudhu or not putting on make up at all. I was wondering if I was just going too far with the idea or if anybody knew about a ruling or some easier way.

Allahu 3alam, if you hear of anything let me know inshaAllah because for some reason this idea has gotten stuck in my head lol

  4. I also don't wear make up much at all, because I would have to wash it off before making wudu. I either put it on in the morning, and wash it off before I pray dhuhr and then just don't put it back on, or I'll put it on in the evening and wash it off before bed.

Oh, and it's nice to have a post from you, it's been so long! :)

    1. Yes, I usually do the same if I wear make up, but usually it just seems like such a waste to take it off only a few hours later. Although I guess my husband doesn't see it as a waste since he does appreciate any time I try to make myself look nice mashaAllah.

yes, it has been forever since i had some computer time... inshaAllah I will try to be more regular. Thanks for leaving a comment!!

  5. Salam sis. I don't wear makeup much but if I do, I use the bathroom, make wudhu, and then apply the makeup. Then as long as you stay in a state of wudhu (don't use the bathroom, break wind, etc) you can keep it on all day and pray with it on or at least until maghrib when you might need to use the bathroom again. Hope that makes sense.

    1. wa 3alaikum salam! Yes it totally makes sense. When I wear make up I'm always like "ok don't drink too much water with lunch or else I will have to make wudhu soon" lol

I like wearing makeup for my husband as well :). I don't ever wear foundation though --- it really looks horrible on my skin, and it would be hard to make wu'du! What I do is just wear mascara, eyeliner, and then for my face I do a little blush and light powder (Cornsilk powder is really nice). That way, it looks pretty, but washes off easily when it's time for prayer. ;) Hope that helps!

So you do remove the mascara and everything to make wudhu?

I think inshaAllah I just need to find a routine like yours that I can do quickly and remove quickly if I need to make wudhu.

    2. Assalamualaikum wr wb.

it sounds like you are asking as if you are going to wear makeup everyday lol but you said you dont wear makeup often ...so if you dont wear often as you say you dont..then washing the makeup off before wudhu and re-applying it after is not such a big deal if its once in a while that you wear makeup...but i totally understand if you wear makeup every day then it will cause a hassle .... right?

just trying to make things easier for you. lol

    1. wa 3alaikum salam sis,

Well for me, I go to events where men and women sit together unless it is something unavoidable here like going to the store etc. In that case I would not wear anything on my face that enhances my look at all. I wear just moisturizer to keep the skin from getting damaged (since I have very dry and sensitive skin).

I am not a scholar or anything, but what I would do for myself is to not wear any glowing cream in a place where non-mahram guys are gonna be.

I guess what I'm saying, if there are gonna be non-mahram men, why do you need your skin to look good? If you are worried that your husband will see you without make up for a short time, I would tell you I promise there will be a time when he sees you without make up, so this time in outside will not matter.

And above the make up consideration, I would ask yourself if you are comfortable sitting and being casually around men who are non-mahram. When I am in a situation like this I ask myself "Would I be embarrassed or ashamed to tell Allah what I did to His face?" And then I try to act according to the answer to the question.

I hope this helps inshaAllah <3 please feel free to email me at newmuslimwife (at) gmail.com if you would like to talk more inshaAllah

I'm no scholar but my teacher told me something to this effect. Makeup that doesn't let water through will have to be removed for wudhu. For instance nail polish/color would come of like a plastic flake if scratched off. It won't let water through. If you put a thick layer of waterproof mascara, for instance, on your skin like on a finger, I expect it will also come off as a plastic-like flake. However oil/gel/powder -like makeup allows wudhu. For instance lipstick is like a oil. Oil on your hair will also be allowed when doing wudhu. Foundation and lotion/cream etc are like a gel/oil plus powder/pigments and are allowed during wudhu. If there comes a foundation that doesn't allow water to go through like a layer of nail color doesn't, it would not be allowed during wudhu. There is no such foundation, but what I mean is what counts is the resistance to water. If you put a big blob of foundation on paper, let it dry, then put drops of water in the center,it would soak thru to the paper. Same goes for a thick layer of pressed powder or talcum powder or eye shadow. However if there ever is a type of shadow/lipstick that won't let water soak through and is not oil either (oil will let water through when rubbed and is not a solid barrier like nail color so it is acceptable for wudhu, no need to rub) it will not be acceptable when doing wudhu. Sometimes there is glitter in makeup, in such a case I personally give the makeup area a light rub during wudhu, but that's just to satisfy myself. My teacher said big lumps of glitter would be like aluminum foil paper and won't let water through. Avoid glitter to be safe. Hope this helps. :)

  11. Just as another tip, try using non-waterproof makeup and fix up smudges with wet wipes after wudhu, then top up your make up.

My comments are quite late, but it's the first time I read this blog :)

  12. Walaykum salaam sister:)
Its been almost 2 years since i got married and in the beginning i would want to put on makeup but i wouldn't because taking it off everytime for wudhu is so hard lol
But then i realized that my husband really liked it so what i do now is see which salaah times have the longest time between them.. So for example if i pray dhuhr right on time at 1 then i have till asr which is at 6 (this is india prayer times) and if my husband usually comes home late so i try to pray isha on time and then i can leave it on until i sleep or till fajr
What helps is praying on time so you have more time between salaahs
And we should be praying on time anyway so it works well!
    Hope this helps:)
